Description
Spätestens seit der 2. Dynastie (ca. 2800–2700 v. Chr.) sind erstmals sogenannte Rollsiegel belegt, die aus Holz, Bein oder Stein gefertigt wurden. Die Inschrift ist jeweils in die Oberfläche eingeschnitten. Die Siegel wurden sehr wahrscheinlich auf noch feuchtem Ton abgerollt, mit dem Gefäße, Kisten etc. versiegelt wurden. Während die Abdrücke und Abrollungen häufig belegt sind, gibt es nur wenige Siegel, die aus archäologisch dokumentierten Befunden stammen. (R. Kuhn)
