Glocken gehören zu der Instrumentengruppe der Idiophone („Selbstklinger“), die als Ganzes oder in Teilen selbst schwingend ihren Ton erzeugen. Sie wurden wegen ihres hellen, reinen Klangs bei Kulthandlungen und Tempelfesten verwendet. (O. Zorn)
