Fragment of an ostracon inventory listing ship's equipment, mostly rigging such as stays, mast-girdles and bundles of papyrus rope, some new and some used, with running totals. It was found in a Roman rubbish dump at the Red Sea port of Berenike and dates to about AD 50-75.
Several nautical terms (opisthypera, histozonai, trochileia) are rare and their exact meanings uncertain; 'from use' marks second-hand items. Both edges of each line are lost, so items and totals cannot all be matched.
Working translation of the DDbDP edition, made with Claude Opus 5.5 from the edition and the catalogue records shown below (catalogued as Inventory of Equipment). It has not been reviewed by a papyrologist: check the edition before citing. Restorations follow the edition; […] marks lost text and (?) an uncertain reading.
