BGU 1,15,1 reprinted in Chrest.Wilck. 393 ΑἰμίλιοςΑἰμίλιος Σατορνῖλος στρατηγοῖς Ἑπτὰ νομῶν καὶ Ἀρσινοίτου χωρὶς Αὐάσεως χαίρεινχαίριν. τὴν ἐνβολὴν καὶ σφόδρα ὑφʼ ὑμῶνἡμῶν ἀμελου μένην ὁρῶ. ἕκαστος γὰρ ὑφʼ ἡμῶν πυρὸν ἐπιστέλλων ἐν τοῖς θησαυροῖς ἔχειν οὐ κα ταβλέπεινκαταβλέπιν, τὴν δὲ αἰτίαν οὐδεμίαν ἄλλην ἢ τὴν τῶν εἰωθότων παραφέρεινπαραφέριν τὸν πυρὸν ὀλιγότητα εἶναιἶναι. ἡγοῦμαι οὖν, πολλάκις μὲν ἐπέστειλαἐπέστιλα εἰς τὸ νῦν ἀριθμὸν ἀγαγεῖνἀγαγῖν, ὑμεῖςὑμῖς δὲ οὐδέποτεοὐδέποται πρὸς τὰ ἐμὰ γράμματα ἐπιστρέφεσθαιἐπιστραφεται, ἠξιώσατεἠξιώσαται, ἀλλὰ συνκακουργοῦντες τοῖς ὀνηλάταις εἰς μὲν τὸν ἀριθμὸν αὐτοῦς ἀναλάμβαται, τὴν δὲ λεγομένην τριονίαν ὑπάρχεινὑπάρχιν οὐκ ἀναγκά σεταιἀνανκάσεταιἀνανκάσαται, ὅθεν οὖν μένειμένι αὐτοὺς μὲν ἀπολαύεινἀπολάβιν τῶν ἐκ τῆς ὀνηλασίας ὑπαρχόντων δικαίου, τὸ δὲ ἐξ αὐτῶν τῷ ταμείῳ μὴ παραγίνεσθαι. εἶπαἶπα οὖν τοῦτο, μὴ πλέον αὐτοῖς προχωρῇ ἂν ὕστερον ῥαδίως τῶν τε ἐχόντων τὸν ἐντελῆ ἀριθμὸν καὶ τὴν ἐνδεόντων ὑπάρχῃ, κελεύω ἕναἱνα ἕκαστον τῶν ὀνηλατῶν ἀναγκάζεινἀνανκάζιν τὴν ὀφειλομένην ὑπʼ αὐτοῦ τρέφεσθαιτρέφεσται τριονίαν, ὑμᾶς δὲ σφρα γῖδασφραγιδαν ἐπιβάλλεινἐπιβάλλιν ἑκάστῳ ὄνῳ. οὕτως γὰρ οἵ τε ὀνηλάται τρέφειντρέφιν τὸν ἐντελῆ ἀριθμὸν ἀναγ κασθήσονταιἀνανκασθήσονται καὶ ὑμεῖςὑμῖς vestiges. ἔχοιτεἔχοιται τοῦς ὀνηλάτας φωραθήσεσθαιφωραθήσασθαι. ἐρρῶσθαιἐρῶσθε ὑμᾶς εὔχομαιεὔχαμαι. ἔτους ε Ἐπεὶφ ιζ.Translations (1)
Aemilius Saturnilus to the strategoi of the Seven Nomes and Arsinoites apart from Awasis, greetings. I observe that you neglect the contribution very much. For every one of us sending the wheat in the treasuries does not [obscured] perceive, and there is no other reason than that the usual supply of wheat is insufficient. I, therefore, believe that although I have often directed to bring a number [restored words] to the present, you have never turned to my letters, considering it worthy, but instead, you cooperate with the donkeys’ drivers, taking them into account for the number, but not compelling the so-called trionia to exist, so it results that they indeed enjoy the profits from the transport, but what is due to the treasury does not arrive from them. Therefore, I said this so that it would not be easier for them later, so that both the complete number and what is lacking will be available. I order each of the muleteers to be forced to bear the required trionia, and you to attach the seal to each donkey.
